Writing Prompts Inspired by We All Celebrate

Festivals and celebrations happen around the year, all across the world. In this book We All Celebrate, illustrated by Jenny Bloomfield, I’ve introduced many new festivals across the four seasons in Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Have you read the book? Then here are some writing prompts to try!

Have you been to a birthday celebration – maybe your own or your friend’s or your grandfather’s? Write about the rituals of a birthday celebration. Include as many sensory details you can – describing the smell, the sounds, the weather, and the food.

Have you read the story of La Tomatina? Can you retell this story in your own words? You can even include illustrations and why not retell the story in comic strips?

In France, they celebrate the Giant Omelette Festival. Imagine you’re at this festival. Describe how people bring the 15000 eggs, break them and make the omelette? Would you add any other ingredients? Can you describe the sounds and the smells during this festival?

Can you think of a festival celebrated in your family or neighbourhood or city? Why do they celebrate it and when? What do they do during this festival? Is it unique to your family or neighbourhood? If so, why? Can you research and find out other festivals that are celebrated in small communities in your country?
